Drowning Pool’s “Bodies” on Loop Was the Perfect Soundtrack to AEW’s ‘Anarchy In The Arena’ Last Night
Pro wrestling. Early 2000s nu metal. It’s a perfect combination that really doesn’t need introduction. So what happens when you take the no-holds-barred, fight everywhere and anywhere style of AEW’s ‘Anarchy In The Arena’ match and combine it with Drowning Pool’s “Bodies” playing on loop at least half a dozen times?
You get cinema, ladies and gentlemen. Pure, unadulterated cinema.
Last night was AEW’s annual sort of birthday celebration, Double Or Nothing. It’s usually jam packed full of amazing matches and one of those matches tends to be the ‘Anarchy In The Arena’ match, in which two groups of wrestlers take the fight all over the arena. Yes, that means brawling amidst the crowds, in the parking lot, on the stage… everywhere. These events tend to be violent, bloody, and oftentimes hilarious, as wrestlers find new and innovative ways to inflict damage on one another.
This year was no exception. We had people throwing themselves off balconies, smashing each other with various objects, and at one point a woman used a staple gun on another wrestler’s tongue. But what made this year special was the backing music that went through most of the match.
At first, the match started and it seemed like something was wrong with production, as one of the wrestlers’ intros kept playing on repeat. Then, the music changed and the arena was filled with the 1982 hit “I’m So Excited” by the Pointer Sisters. Yes, the fight continued and yes, it was as good as it sounds.
But it wasn’t until Kenny Omega got on a mic and asked for the music to change once again that shit really went off the rails, as Drowning Pool’s “Bodies” started playing and all hell broke loose. The crowd sung along and things just popped off. The song ultimately looped at least half a dozen times, with the music only coming to an end when someone was thrown into an obviously fake speaker, as if that single speaker was the thing pumping out the music to an entire arena. Brilliant.
It’s this exact level of campiness that makes pro wrestling awesome. Sure, the serious storylines are fun and all, but where else are you going to get grown men and women doing death defying stunts, taking hard bumps and bleeding profusely through it all while thousands of folks sing along to “Bodies”?!
Wrestling and metal, folks. It’s a potent combination, for sure.
