Firespawn Return to Honor L-G Petrov the Only Way They Know How: Riffs, Blasphemy, and Beer
Firespawn, the Swedish death metal juggernaut made up of veterans from some of the country’s most ferocious bands, have officially announced their return. And yes, they’ve tapped none other than Jörgen Sandström (ex-Grave, Entombed, Torture Division) to take over vocal duties following the tragic 2021 death of L-G Petrov.
In a statement soaked in reverence and raw energy, founding guitarist Victor Brandt (ex-Entombed, ex-Aeon) made it clear that this is more than just a reunion.
“We’re back! This band has always been about a deep connection — between us, the music, and the scene that’s supported us from day one. We’re doing this with love and respect for LG, and his spirit is still very much present in everything we do.”
Brandt also emphasized that bringing in Sandström wsasn’t a business decision — it was a natural continuation of the band’s legacy.
“Having Jörgen joining us feels like the natural next step. He brings both the fire and the spirit we need. We’ve missed this band and we’ve missed all of you. Death metal is in our blood. Let’s do this!”
Sandström made it clear he’s not trying to fill Petrov’s shoes — he’s here to honor his memory and keep the chaos rolling.
“I believe that LG would have wanted Firespawn to keep going. He loved the band and he loved death metal. I’m not here as a replacement for our late friend, but to honor the legacy of our brother — have fun, play death metal, drink beer and headbang!”
Formed in 2015, Firespawn was never your average side project. This was a full-blown death metal supergroup, featuring Petrov, Brandt, Fredrik Folkare (Unleashed, Necrophobic), Alex Impaler (Necrophobic), and Matte Modin (Raised Fist, ex-Dark Funeral, ex-Defleshed). Together they released three albums — Shadow Realms (2015), The Reprobate (2017), and Abominate (2019) — before the band was put on hold after Petrov’s passing.
Now they’re back, with a new frontman, renewed purpose, and apparently a lot of new stuff in the works. They’re carrying the torch for L-G Petrov and coming back to crush skulls in his honor.
