GWAR’s Mike Bishop Responds to MAGA Pissbabies: “It’s a Cartoon, It’s ‘Looney Tunes'”

Over the weekend, GWAR did what GWAR always does and “murdered” some famous people on stage while performing at Riot Fest. Of course, they didn’t actually trot people out and put them to death, but somehow recent reactions from the right would not only make you think they did actually kill folks, but also that their actions would normalize political violence against right-wing figures.

In particular, some weak-kneed, mealy-mouthed pissbabies on the right clutched their pearls over footage of the band beheading grotesque effigies of Elon Musk and President Donald Trump, causing blood to spray dramatically over the crowd. Those images, they claimed, were too much in the wake of the assassination of right-wing grifter/bigot/commentator Charlie Kirk earlier this month.

In a recent interview with Billboard, GWAR frontman Michael “Blöthar the Berserker” Bishop said he took issue with the whole kerfuffle regarding their act, calling the whole response absurd. Additionally, he immediately took issue with the claim that the band’s now 41-year-old act risked inciting and normalizing political violence at all.

“The idea that GWAR is normalizing violence is patently absurd.

“We’re not millionaires that are afraid of what people are going to say when they see what we do… Yeah, it pissed me off! We’re a group of artists that makes art, and it’s really the idea that what we have done is normalizing violence… there’s nothing normal about the violence that goes on at a GWAR show. It’s a cartoon, it’s Looney Tunes.

“It’s a parody of violence. It’s trying to make violence into a spectacle and show humanity’s absolute absurdity. That’s what GWAR is, it’s absurdism. To say it’s normalizing violence is really reaching.”

As I said in our post about this whole thing yesterday, the idea that people in 2025 would make such a claim against GWAR is ridiculous. Again, they’ve been doing this sort of thing for more than four decades now. They’ve killed people on both sides of the political aisle, as well as major dignitaries, America’s foes, and at least a couple Popes in there for good measure. It’s a way for them to spray a bodily fluid onto their crowds, nothing more.
