Huntress Guitarist Blake Meahl to Carry On Jill Janus’ Legacy with Unreleased Works

Back in the early 2010s, a bands called Huntress that absolutely ripped shit. Their combination of old school heavy metal and thrash elements, coupled with the fact that they were fronted by a vocal dynamo named Jill Janus, and you’ve got a recipe for one of the more exciting bands of their time.

Sadly, the band’s story tragically ended before it could really get off the ground. Despite putting out three albums — 2012’s Spell Eater, 2013’s Starbound Beast, and 2015’s Static, Janus announced in October 2015 that the band was no more. In her now deleted Facebook post, she said her ongoing struggles with her mental health was a major factor for the band’s ending.

Nearly three years later, Janus succumbed to her mental health struggles, ultimately taking her own life at the far-too-young age of 43. At the time, her death shocked the metal world. And just like that, anything Huntress’ story was forever encased in her passing. Just like so many other rock and metal stories that ended in an equally tragic way, the band had unreleased works and questions about whether the band would reconvene in her memory.

Seven years after Janus’ untimely passing, Huntress guitarist Blake Meahl took to social media to announce that he’d been given official stewardship of the fallen vocalist’s unfinished works by her family.

“7 years would feel like a particularly devastating time since she left without some good news, but I got some! I’m ecstatic to say Jill’s family has officially granted me stewardship of her works. I can now actually move forward with finishing and releasing some songs that are gonna rip your god damn heart out. 7 years and burning brighter than ever!”

The idea being that with some work, those tracks could see the light of day. Seeing as that could do a lot to cement Janus’ legacy long-term, getting to finally hear some of these unreleased tracks. And as far as fans go, this is a last chance to realize what Jill had to say through her music, even in death.
