Megadeth’s Countdown Could Mean More Than a Simple ‘Rust In Peace’ Tie-In
Don’t look now, but if you head over to Megadeth‘s official website, you’ll be greeted with a stark white page that has the band logo up top, a countdown clock that should come to an end tomorrow at 11 a.m. EDT, and some lyrics from the classic tune “Holy Wars… The Punishment Due.” Specifically, they reference these lyrics:
“The end is near/It’s crystal clear/Part of the master plan…”
Of course, the obvious conclusion is that this countdown has something to do with Rust In Peace, but allow me to put my tin foil hat on and look like I’m about to unravel the mystery behind Pepe Silva. I don’t think it has anything to do with that iconic 1990 album. I’m willing to bet it’s got bigger implications, such as the future of the band.
I think Megadeth’s going to simultaneously announce their next record and reveal that it will be their last. We’ve known that Megadeth’s been in the studio for a while now, so the first half of my prediction feels right, but that second half about it all being over soon just needs a little closer look
Rust In Peace came out on September 24, 1990, which doesn’t fall in line with tomorrow’s date of August 14. Next year, however, is that album’s 35th anniversary, so maybe tomorrow’s announcement will have something to do with that? But then you look at how this is all being presented.
Just consider the lyrics posted above. Seems pretty clear that if anyone would have a “master plan” for Megadeth, it would be 63-year-old Dave Mustaine. Dude’s always said this band was his baby from start to finish, so maybe he’s decided it’s time to hang it up? Also, why post on Twitter about the timer with the caption “The end is near”?!
I think we’re all going to be excited and bummed out in equal measure tomorrow. I’ll be happy if I’m wrong about the end of Megadeth, but I wouldn’t be shocked if that were the case.
